That Hum Is Coming From Somewhere

Wheel Bearing and Hub Service

A wheel bearing is a simple part with an unglamorous job. It lets the wheel spin freely while carrying the weight of the vehicle and every load a corner or a pothole puts through it. When one starts to fail it rarely goes quietly. You get a hum, a growl or a rumble that rises with road speed, and it is easy to mistake for tire noise until it gets worse.

Services Include:
  • Noise and vibration diagnosis to identify the failing corner
  • Wheel bearing and wheel hub assembly replacement
  • Checks for play, roughness and heat at each wheel
  • ABS wheel speed sensor inspection where the sensor is part of the hub

The part that matters most here is the diagnosis. Bearing noise travels, and the corner that sounds loudest from the driver's seat is not always the corner that is worn. Confirming it properly is what stops a good bearing being replaced while the bad one stays on the car.

Call to Schedule

Bearing, Hub, or Something Else Entirely

Wheel bearings sit in the middle of a group of parts that all produce similar complaints. Tires cup and roar. Differentials whine. Brake hardware drags. Before anything is replaced it is worth ruling those out, because a bearing is the most commonly blamed and not always the guilty one.

How the Corner Gets Checked:
  • The noise is characterized first, by speed, by load and by whether it changes through a curve
  • The wheel is lifted and checked for play, roughness and drag by hand
  • Tread wear is read, since cupped or feathered tires imitate bearing noise closely
  • Hub temperature, ABS faults and nearby suspension joints are checked for corroborating evidence

Loading the bearing through a turn is the classic test. A worn bearing usually gets louder when the vehicle leans onto it and quieter when the load comes off, which is a useful clue about which side is failing. It is not infallible on its own, which is why it is one check among several rather than the whole diagnosis.

Warning Signs

What a Failing Bearing Sounds and Feels Like

  • 01

A hum that tracks road speed

The classic symptom. A drone or growl that gets louder the faster you go and does not change when you press the clutch or shift gear, because it is tied to the wheel rather than the engine.

  • 02

Noise that changes through a curve

If the sound grows in a long sweeping bend one way and fades the other way, the bearing on the loaded side is the one under suspicion. This is one of the more reliable pointers there is.

  • 03

Play or wobble at the wheel

With the wheel off the ground, a bearing that has worn badly allows a rock or a knock that should not be there. Play at the wheel is not something to keep driving on.

  • 04

Vibration through the floor or seat

Where a tire imbalance usually shakes the steering wheel at a particular speed, a failing bearing tends to send a coarser vibration up through the body and grows steadily worse rather than peaking and fading.

  • 05

An ABS light that will not stay off

On many vehicles the wheel speed sensor lives inside the hub assembly. When the bearing degrades the sensor signal goes with it, so an ABS fault and a bearing noise on the same corner are often the same repair.

  • 06

A hot wheel after a drive

A bearing that has lost its grease generates heat. If one hub is noticeably hotter than the other three after a normal drive, and the brake on that corner is not dragging, the bearing is the next thing to look at.

Our Process

How the Job Runs

Four steps, in the same order every time, so the right corner gets the work.

  • 01

    Drive It First

The noise is heard in the conditions that produce it. Speed, load and cornering behavior tell us more in five minutes than a stationary inspection does.

  • 02

    Confirm at the Wheel

The vehicle goes on the lift and each corner is checked by hand for play, roughness and drag, with tires and brakes ruled out along the way.

  • 03

    Findings and Options

You hear which corner it is, how it was confirmed, and what the replacement involves on your vehicle before any part is ordered.

  • 04

    Replace and Road Test

Fasteners are torqued to specification, any ABS fault is cleared and verified, and the car is driven again to confirm the noise is actually gone.

Common Questions

Wheel Bearing Questions

  • A faint hum is not an emergency, but it is a part that gets worse rather than better. Once there is play at the wheel, grinding, or noise loud enough to be obvious with the windows up, it should be looked at promptly. A bearing that fails completely can damage the hub and the knuckle around it, which turns a contained repair into a larger one.

  • They sound remarkably alike, which is why tires get checked first. Cupped or unevenly worn tires produce a roar that rises with speed just as a bearing does. The difference usually shows up in cornering behavior and in how the tread reads, and in some cases simply rotating the tires settles the question.

  • No. Unlike brakes, bearings are replaced individually as they fail. If the second one on the same axle is already showing play or roughness we will say so, but there is no reason to replace a healthy bearing simply because the one opposite it failed.

  • It depends on how your vehicle was built. Many modern cars use a sealed hub assembly, where the bearing, the mounting flange and often the ABS sensor come as one unit that bolts on and off. Older and some heavier vehicles use a separate bearing that is fitted into the knuckle. Which one your vehicle takes affects both the parts cost and the labor, and you will hear which case you are in when we call with the findings.

  • Because on a lot of vehicles the wheel speed sensor is built into the bearing or the hub. As the bearing wears, the gap and the alignment the sensor relies on change, the signal gets erratic and the ABS module logs a fault. Replacing the hub normally resolves both complaints at once.

  • There is no fixed interval. Bearings are killed by water intrusion, impact damage from potholes and curbs, and simple accumulated load, so two identical vehicles can differ enormously. Many last well past a hundred thousand miles. Others fail early after one bad pothole, and nothing about that is unusual.
